The Singapore Teddy Bear Show, which was created by the people at Moob International two years ago, has grown into an event of lively interest in the local soft sculpture art scene. Back by popular demand, Moob International promises an event that’s sure to thrill teddy bear enthusiasts and new comers to the show.

The 2009 theme, "Bear Traditions Unveiled", reveals how a traditional art form can be created into something new and contemporary. The art of bear making had existed for more than a hundred years; while many of the original methods are still being used, artists today are looking to break new grounds, test fresh ideas and vary this art form for an updated appeal.

This year, expect the same sterling line-up of international award-winning artists from Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and USA. We have made sure to bring back these favourites of the Teddy Bear Show to wow you with their latest creations.

The Singapore Teddy Bear Show awaits you !

To add sparkle to the occasion, STEIFF Teddy JewelsTM would make a dazzling appearance at the show. This limited edition STEIFF Bear spots a light peach Swarovski® XillionTM crystal stone in her ear and
wears a gorgeous Swarovski® heart ornament around her neck, which is available only in this special set. JewelsTM is a limited production to the year of 2007 and it is definitely a rare find for the discerning collector.

And if you feel inspired by the artists and their works, you could get helpful hints on how to get started on this hobby.
You will be surprised by the wide range of German and Japanese fabrics made available by Japan Teddy Bear Co Ltd. Bear enthusiasts, experts or amateurs, are going to find themselves having a wonderful time just going through the fine selection.

Catch the fascinating designs and innovative new methods that student artists apply to the art of making `bear softies’. Students from Republic Polytechnic - School of Technology for the Arts, who have participated in a softies making workshop conducted by artists from Moob International, will be putting up their works for sale at the Singapore Teddy Bear Show. Proceeds from the sales of softies will be donated to The Little Arts Academy, to help disadvantaged children get a fair shot at life through an art education.

Annei Leung - Merry Bears
Hong Kong

My journey with the teddy bears started in end 2001. Working full time as an interior designer, it is hard to find spare moments for bearmaking. To give myself a push, I entered competitions whenever I can. Between 2002 & 2006, I was honored to have received 12 nominations & 5 winners in international competitions including Golden Teddy Awards, BBAA & TITA.

I love diversity, tend to be adventurous on colours, materials & styles. Believing that each bruin is a unique life, I am not eager to put a signature on them. Some common features are kept though, including the M-shape nose & 3 toes on each paw.

My bear activities have been much slow down since the establishment of my own interior design studio in 2007. Though I have very few bruins for adoption, I still enjoy attending shows which are always warm and friendly. Hope to see you there.

Mie Kondo - HESO-KUMA
Japan

Mie’s interest in teddy bears started innocently as a hobby, when she got married. She collected bears for fifteen years, until 1999, when she decided to try making teddy bears herself. By 2001, she had gotten so good at it, that she was creating bears for advertisements, and participating at conventions.

Not satisfied with her successes, Mie continued to push the boundaries, as she experimented with new techniques and material. She has since successfully coloured her bears with dyes made from red flowers, and received a patent for her technique of attaching solid accessories to stuffed toys. In recent years, her creations have spotted birth-stone in navel, crystals in paw/navel, black diamond in eyes/navel and 24K-gold threaded nose. Her distinctive line of bears is sold under the HESO-KUMA brand.

Terumi Yoshikawa - Rose Bear
Japan

Terumi started making teddy bear in 1988.
She is one of the most prized-winning teddy bear artists in Japan, and one of her bears is in the possession of Louvre Museum in Paris.

Through teddy bears, Terumi joined a lots of charity show and she is the current director of Japan Teddy Bear Association.

Heather Lyell & Roy Watkins -D'Lyell Bears
New Zealand

Heather started collecting bears some twenty years ago, and has come a long way since then. She did not anticipate that her passion would develop into a successful business, designing and making bears. With her husband, Roy, she opened Auckland's only bear store. The business grew quickly, and they finally sold it in 1998 to concentrate on D'Lyell Bears. They have not looked back since.

Heather’s big break came the same year after submitting 'Edwin' to Teddy Hermann, the famous German manufacturer. Hermann continues to release Heather’s design. She has recently started design work with an exciting new English company, Charlie Bears.

Heather’s love of jewellery, handbags and antiques is reflected in her designs. Her intricately detailed pieces are bought as display items by Museums and private collectors around the world. Heather and Roy are proud to be able to take part in their first show in Singapore and they look forward to meeting new friends.

Emen Chen -Emen's Creations
Singapore

Emen Chen has been making soft-sculptured animals since 2003. He has joined the growing ranks of bear artists, and has attended international teddy bear shows in Korea, Japan, Singapore and Germany to trade ideas and hone his knowledge.

Emen is a professional art instructor who enjoys sharing his knowledge of the art with people of similar interest.

Fabian Song - Fabian's Teddy
Singapore

Fabian Song discover his love for the art of teddy bear making in early 1996. Today, he is one of the rare few local pioneer artists who have earned recognition through International awards. Amongst the various accolades, Fabian’s achievements include winning the Toby Award, Public’s Choice and Industry’s Choice more than once, as well as the prestigious Golden George (Germany) twice.

Fabian makes about 100 teddy bears each year. Each bear is personally designed by him, and handmade using high quality material. These bears make their appearances at 6 to 8 international shows each year, and have been sought after by aficionados from USA, Japan, England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Australia, Hong Kong, Korea, and Singapore, just to name a few.

Like all artists dedicated to their craft, Fabian has developed his individual style and expression. He is especially proud of his “open mouth” series of bears. His works have been featured in Teddy Bear Times, Teddy Bear Club International, Teddy Bear Review, Japan Teddy Bear Fan Club and mentioned in the tribute to Teddy Bear Artists Series 3 by Linda Mullins, as well as publications in Korea, Belgium, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Leonard Gotoking - J.A.BRUINSdzigns
Singapore

Leonard is an award-winning teddy bear artist who has been making teddy bears since 1996. His curiosity was piqued after he was presented with one as a gift. Leonard later attended a class on making bears conducted by Jennifer Laing, and soon left behind his career in the fashion design industry to concentrate on his new found passion. While he humbly claimed to be still a student of the craft, Leonard has come a long way since he first started. His bears wear unique doleful expressions, and Leonard notes himself that his designs tend to grow in appeal with time.

Leonard’s works have been featured in magazines in several countries, books by Linda Mullins, and earned mention in the Teddy Bear Encyclopaedia. He has also won several awards, including the Singapore Teddy Artist of the Year for large dressed bears, and International awards at the Linda Mullins show and TBAI show, as well as a couple of Toby nominations.

Ng Ling Ling - SugarPunk
Singapore

I've always had an interest in drawing characters but my attempts in illustration didn't go anywhere. In 2007, I decided to turn my characters into dolls. I learned how to make cloth dolls from doll artist Susanna Oroyan's books. My dolls are thread-sculpted and thread-jointed, with hand-painted features.

The first doll I made was a tribute to goth rocker, Marilyn Manson. I was feeling angsty at that time and decided to make punk rock and goth dolls. I have been selling my dolls on etsy.com and enjoy the interactions with the people who have adopted by my dolls. I particularly enjoy custom requests to make dolls based on real-life individuals and storybook characters.

I like the idea of being a 'dollmaker' because there's something creepy and slightly sinister about working with tiny limbs.

Wayne Lim - Wayneston Bears
Singapore

Inspiring to be a toy designer since he was young, Wayne attended art and design courses at the Product Design Faculty of the Nanyang Polytechnic and, later on, the Lasalle College of the Arts. He enjoys different types of craftwork, including drawing, painting, beading and jewelry design and is thankful to have an innate ability to translate 2D illustrations into 3D forms.

Be it the aesthetics, internal mechanics or functionality, toys have never failed to excite Wayne. He attended the teddy bear workshop conducted by bear artist Emen Chen and made his first bear on his 24th birthday. The reason why he enjoys bear-making so much is because it allows him to explore endless possibilities and express his creativity through the craft.

Still a novice at the art of bear-making, Wayne is currently exploring the various techniques of bear sculpturing to create an individualistic style that is unlike any other.

Wayne believes that the teddy bear is a piece of art which portrays the mood of the artist at the time of its creation. He feels that the teddy bear generally symbolizes peace and happiness, and should be given with love to the ones we care about.
