Teddy Bear Making Workshop 2008
30 August 2008 to 4 October 2008
When The Singapore Teddy Bear Show 2008 (STBS 2008) comes around, it will draw the attention of sophisticated collectors and discerning hobbyists from around the world. At such events, we do need a gentle reminder that teddy bears, while appreciated as collectibles, are toys that bring magic to a child’s world. If Moob International had to suggest a slogan for the world, it would be “a teddy bear for every child”. As a professional craftsman, my fortune waxes and wanes depending on the opinion of bear experts. But I know that with children, I will always get high marks for the bears that I make.
You can thus understand why it is easy for me to want to get involved in children-specific non-profits, especially when their aims are to help to uplift children from fractured backgrounds, and give them a shot at a brighter future. At the STBS 2008, which will be held in November 9, 2008 at the Arts House, I will be doing my part for some ten- to fifteen-year olds. These kids, each of whom have shown some promise or talent in music, dance, theatre or visual arts, stand a very real chance to complete a formal education in the arts, if The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF) has its way. The Fund was created specifically to raise money to fund education in the arts for children who have been disadvantaged by socio-economic circumstances.
Prior to STBS 2008, I will run a workshop to teach the invited children to create their own teddy bears. By doing so, I am also hoping that some of the children would uncover hidden talents in the arts, while being introduced to the joy of bear-making. Sadly, for many of these children, the idea of fun is in serious short supply at home. The finished handiworks will be showcased at the STBS 2008.

It’s good to know that teddy bears not only give comfort and strength to children; by marrying the efforts of teddy bear artists like me and well-meaning organisations like the BT BAF, we could seriously begin to make a difference in the children’s lives.
